TREK 2000, in collaboration with Panasonic Systems Asia Pacific, is creating a global first, once again.

It is a marketplace, which is cloud-based, where journalists can upload and, in the next moment, offer to sell their news videos to broadcasters.

Journalists just need a special version of Trek's Flucard and a smartphone with an Internet connection.

The high-speed transmission is carried out wirelessly and directly from the video camera by tapping on the Wi-Fi capabilities of the FluCard, the world’s first Wi-Fi-enabled SD card.

Once their videos are uploaded to the cloud-based system dubbed Cloud Stringers, the journalists can peg an asking price for the videos.

Broadcasters can preview the videos (in low-resolution) and buy them in the next moment, and download them in high-resolution.

“Where breaking news is concerned, time is of the essence. As such, Cloud Stringers is set to be a game changer for the media and broadcasting industries, as data transfer and management will become much more efficient. It is a privilege to be working with Panasonic again, and we look forward to creating another world-first together,” said Henn Tan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Trek 2000.

The journalists can easily check their accounts to find out how much sales their videos have made.

Trek said that users are guaranteed the highest levels of encryption, data redundancy and watermark security features.

Cloud Stringers has already begun marketing the solution to broadcasters and journalists but no names were revealed at a soft launch last Thursday (Aug 22) at ParkRoyal on Beach Road.

It was not revealed if Trek has an equity stake in Cloud Stringers. More details are expected to be revealed when the system is officially launched on Oct 1.

Cloud Stringers is another product of Trek’s plan to build an ecosystem around its FluCard.

Apart from digital imaging, the FluCard can be extended for use in office automation, consumer electronics, security and medical devices.

At the recent France-Singapore ICT Awards 2013. Cloud Stringers won the “Most Innovative Consumer Solution” Award, which seeks to recognize Singapore-based companies that design and develop innovative solutions to improve the overall consumers’ experience.

A very interesting and creative product which would be very useful for market players. Unfortunately, I think the market is not very big and, though it may turn out to be profitable, I do not envisage big money to be made from this. However, product spin-offs would be very likely which may broaden its composite market size, e.g. churning out by-product to cater for on-line auction houses, etc.
