This article is the first in a series in conjunction with Eu Yan Sang’s 130th anniversary this year. The articles will explore various key aspects of Eu Yan Sang’s business.

BIGGEST (in the entire Group):
If you are familiar with Eu Yan Sang outlets in Singapore, its outlet in Shaw Parade shopping mall, Kuala Lumpur, will take your breath away.

The outlet takes up an entire floor - that’s 25,000 sq ft, compared to the 1,000 sq ft average for the Group’s stores.

This mega outlet opened in December 2007 on the ground level of Shaw Parade.

A foot reflexology centre is part of Eu Yan Sang's offering in Shaw Parade

There, Eu Yan Sang sells virtually the entire range of its hundreds of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) products, and tonic foods and health supplements.

It also operates a Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic where people go to be treated for ailments.

Then there is a foot reflexology centre which is comfortably fitted out.

On the second level – the entire level too – is Eu Yan Sang’s office. Size alone is not what makes Eu Yan Sang’s presence a standout there.

On the ground floor, it also operates a 120-seat restaurant, Zun Kitchenette, where you can savour cuisine cooked with Chinese herbs.

For RM8 a bowl, you get double-boiled chicken soup cooked with herbs and dried longans. There's also snakehead fish (sang yue) cooked with dates and American ginseng. And to round off a meal, enjoy bird’s nest pudding (RM26.80)

That’s just a sampling of an extensive menu of food cooked without MSG, preservatives or artificial colouring.

The restaurant, which marks Eu Yan Sang’s maiden foray into such a business, also functions as a central kitchen for three smaller-scale ‘express food’ outlets of Eu Yan Sang in other shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur.

Richard Eu, CEO of Eu Yan Sang, says the Group could replicate its restaurant business in Singapore.

OLDEST (in the entire Group):  In sharp contrast to the modern Shaw Parade mall, a building in Kampar in the Malaysian state of Perak has the distinction of housing an outlet that is not only the oldest in Malaysia but also in the entire Eu Yan Sang Group.

It has been in existence since around 1900. That’s longevity!

South Bridge Road, Singapore, of old: Eu Yan Sang's HQ is still located there.

OLDEST & BIGGEST (in Singapore):  A three-storey shophouse in Chinatown, Singapore, is similarly resilient, having housed a Eu Yan Sang outlet for the last 99 years.

On the 3,000 sq ft ground floor of this building on South Bridge Road is the biggest of the 38 Eu Yan Sang outlets in Singapore.

On the upper floors are the administration offices – this is the HQ of the Group.
