:) :) Aug. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks rose for the first time in five days as the cheapest valuations in more than a decade prompted brokerages to recommend purchasing shares. Komatsu Ltd., the world\'s second-largest earthmover maker, jumped 3.6 percent after Nikko Citigroup Ltd. upgraded the stock on sales prospects in emerging markets. Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd., Japan\'s third-biggest steelmaker, climbed 7.1 percent after Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Co. said higher product prices will boost profit. BHP Billiton Ltd., the world\'s largest mining company, gained 1.6 percent in Sydney before reporting earnings that analysts estimate will increase to a record. ``Valuations are cheap right now and while they\'re still coming down, the silver lining is that earnings are going to improve,\'\' said James Chua, an investment analyst at Phillip Capital Management Ltd. in Singapore, which oversees about $450 million. ``It\'s hard to pick a bottom in the market but it may be nearer than we think.\'\' The MSCI Asia-Pacific Index added 0.5 percent to 125.46 as of 2:32 p.m. in Tokyo, halting a four-day, 3 percent drop. The sell-off took the value of the index last week to 11 times reported profit, the lowest for the measure since at least 1995, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The gauge has slumped 21 percent this year as soaring inflation slowed global economic growth and the world\'s largest financial companies posted writedowns and credit losses of more than $500 billion. Hong Kong\'s economy grew in the second quarter at the slowest pace in five years, government figures on Aug. 15 show. The Hang Seng Index lost 1.2 percent today.

Why bother about such things ? An investor\'s job is to purchase part-ownership in well-run companies at a margin of safety. As long as opportunities present themselves, I don\'t see what it has to do with the market, unless it offers attractive prices for investment into such companies. Be a business analyst, not a market analyst. In that way, you can be more certain of profiting when the company does well. Don\'t forget about colleting dividends along the way too ! :P
