Can Ng Cher Yew pull it off? Something major happened to the abalones?
Oceanus hopes to be profitable again in 2013
Business Times - 19 Nov 2011 Oceanus hopes to be profitable again in 2013 Group aims for bigger farm yields and lower production costs, and also plans to grow sea cucumbers By LYNETTE KHOO OCEANUS Group hopes to return to profitability in 2013 by raising farm yields, lowering production costs and growing sea cucumbers for the first time. But the largest land-based abalone producer is also faced with the daunting task of verifying its abalone numbers after millions of them died mysteriously. Its existing stock is contained in over 30,000 tanks at 50 farms spanning two provinces, Fujian and Guangdong, in China. Group executive chairman Ng Cher Yew said he has sent seven to eight people from the finance team in Singapore to take a stock-take of the abalones. 'The actual counting of abalones will take two to three weeks,' he said yesterday. This has to be done with the help of the Chinese staff on the farms. As an indication of how vast the job is, Oceanus' auditors Deloitte & Touche typically require more than 20 people spending three weeks to cover a 5 per cent sample of the total abalone population, Dr Ng added. The group has also sent security personnel to supervise the farms and new mortality of abalones from now has to be matched by new empty shells. Dr Ng declined to speculate how the 42 million units of abalone died in the third quarter, preferring to explain how he is steering the group forward. 'We want to strongly focus on sales as a breeding company,' Dr Ng said. The current problem is the company is not harvesting the abalones at the right time, he added. To improve its cash cycle, Oceanus will sell its existing abalone stock in each year to gain regular cash flows to acquire high-quality brood stock and to grow sea cucumbers in February next year. The move into growing sea cucumbers takes advantage of the breeding cycle of abalones as the breeding period of sea cucumbers coincides with the lull period of breeding abalones. Dr Ng said the group will also be 'more scientific' in deciding which abalones to sell, by off-loading its juvenile stocks in January and holding back the faster-growing ones for eventual sale at a higher price. While the existing abalone stock still needs to be verified, some 500 tonnes of abalones that are three to four years old are expected to be sold early next year. This is expected to generate cash of 150 million yuan (S$30.5 million) to 200 million yuan by the first half of next year. Oceanus is also looking at lowering the cost of running the farms from more than 200 million yuan per year to 100 million yuan by raising breeding density for its tanks. Dr Ng noted that the tanks are currently breeding abalones at low densities, an area he hopes to address. By working with good abalone breeders in China through profit sharing, yields can be improved and the number of tanks required for abalone breeding can be reduced to 10,000, down from over 30,000 currently, he said. The excess tanks could be used for sea cucumbers or be rented out. The lowest annual rental rate in China for tanks, according to Dr Ng, is about 2,000 yuan per tank. Given these plans, the group is confident of returning in the black in 2013. Oceanus had suffered a net loss of 725 million yuan for the third quarter ended Sept 30, compared to a net profit of 68.6 million yuan a year ago. This was due to a fair value loss of 642.6 million yuan on biological assets as some 42 million abalones died. Dr Ng called the mortality rate as 'just not acceptable' as most of the abalones that died were larger-sized ones. The mortality rate of abalones typically reduces as they mature. The group has formed a working committee consisting of board members and key finance staff since the fourth quarter of last year to study the reasons behind the increased mortality of abalones. Chief executive officer Yu De Hua agreed to step down as CEO and legal representative of the Chinese subsidiaries and the handover is expected to complete soon. Dr Ng said he would like to have two different persons for the role of the legal representative and that of the CEO.

The high mortality rate should be covered by insurance, no? Someone should query the management becos there is no mention of insurance coverage in the announcement. I remember they took up insurance and that Dr Ng was so confident (cocky) that insurance was not needed.

....the Group is expected to record a loss for Q3 and year to date, as compared with a profit for the corresponding period in 2010, largely due to the following:
i. Losses arising from change in fair value of biological assets due to high mortality of abalones in third quarter 2011. The PRC subsidiary reported a loss of 42m units of abalones from its land based farms.
ii. High production costs.
iii. The scientific analysis on the farms has been completed and detailed recommendations made, acceptance and implementation at the PRC subsidiary has been delayed.
Amen. |

From Oceanus, I hv learnt that there is no such thing as little or no risk in business. Aquaculture is risky indeed. And a rapidly growing business is fraught with execution risks, even if the CEO or chairman is bullish, as Dr Ng has been. Why he is now so low-profile?
1. The board of directors of Oceanus Group Limited (the “Board”) wishes to issue a profit guidance regarding the financial results of the Company and its subsidiaries (the “Group”) for the second quarter ended 30 June 2011 (“Q2”).
2. Based on the information currently available, the Group is expected to record a loss for
Q2, as compared with a profit for the corresponding period in 2010, largely due to the
following:
a. Losses arising from change in fair value of biological assets.
i. This is largely due to mortality of abalones in June 2011 arising from an operational misstep in managing the flow of abalones from sea-based farms to the processing plant. The Company had successfully started pilot production of dried abalones in April 2011 and was gearing up for commercial-scale production from 2Q2011 onwards.
However, a delay in processing equipment delivery caused the large sized abalones to be kept for longer than intended at sea, exposing them to overcrowding due to increased size resulting in high mortality.
ii. Since FY2010, the Company had made a deliberate decision to process
its abalones to enhance its value. Consequently, a record number of
abalones was harvested for processing in 2Q2011, resulting in a reduced
pool of biological assets available for fair value computations.
b. Delayed sales. Since dried abalones command the highest margins, live sales
were further curbed to channel more stock for processing. In 2Q2011, the
Company accumulated dried abalone inventory that had since been partially sold
and with the rest expected to be sold in 2H2011. |

Oceanus Group, the world’s largest operator of abalone farms, plans to buy two companies this year to expand its food business and sell shares of its restaurant unit as early as 2012. Oceanus expects to buy a Taiwanese food-packager by mid-2010 and acquire an Australian company later in the year to boost its supply of wild abalones, Chairman Ng Cher Yew said. Ah Yat Abalone Group, its chain of restaurants, will sell shares in Taiwan or Hong Kong, he said.
The company is expanding to ride on China’s growing consumer market as the nation’s economy is expected to grow 9% this year, based on central bank estimates. Oceanus became the first foreign company to list shares in Taiwan last year as ties between the island and the mainland reached their warmest since the two were separated after a civil war six decades ago. “We want to see how we can basically acquire at least one Taiwanese packaging and processing entity and look at the Chinese market,” Ng, 50, said in a Jan. 8 interview in Taipei. The Taiwan listing “gives us a better profile with the government and an image in the market that will help the business.” The company is based in Singapore, where its shares are traded. Oceanus’s operations are mainly in China, where its 137.9 million abalones are in 24,000 tanks along the country’s southern coast. More Restaurants The Taiwan stock has risen 21% since the Taiwan depositary receipts were sold at NT$9.5 (41.6 cents) apiece in December, compared with a 2.1% gain in the benchmark Taiex index. The shares in Singapore lost 7.7% during that time. Oceanus has 20 restaurants in markets including Singapore and China, according to Ah Yat’s website. The company aims to expand to 170 next year, with at least 120 on the mainland, Ng said. The restaurant business may be worth as much as 2 billion yuan ($408 million) in two years, said Jeffrey Lau, an analyst at Polaris Capital (Asia) in Hong Kong. “It will be positive for Oceanus, as investors are in favor of Chinese catering companies,” Lau said. Oceanus is considering the listing in Hong Kong or Taiwan because of demand for abalones from consumers in the two markets, Ng said. The restaurant chain, which is not profitable yet, may turn profitable by the end of the year, said Ng, declining to say how much the chain is making now.
“The restaurant has a different risk profile, so eventually if it’s independent, it makes more sense,” Ng said.

I couldnt believe my eyes! TDR transacted at NT$12.30! OMG, 53.7 cents (Sing). There is a big queue to buy at NT$12.30 .....
In Singapore, the stock only 42 cents - the gap is widening.... Good or no good? |

Precisely.
The foreign houses have not initiated coverage yet because they have not accumulated enough.
Better accumulate, sit tight and wait for Morgan Stanley, UBS and Citigroup to initiate coverage and push up the share price.

From my observation of past bull and bear markets, the SHARE PRICE OF A GOOD “GROWTH STOCK†(LIKE OCEANUS) WILL ALWAYS SURPASS ITS LAST RECORD HIGH ESPECIALLY IN THE FOLLOWING BULL MARKET SO LONG ITS GROWTH AND PERFORMANCE CONTINUE TO REMAIN ON TRACK. Oceanus previous record high was 47 cents made on 11th August 2008. It hit its old record high of 47 cents again on 30th December 2009. Its 9 months nett profits of RMB 279 million for FY 2009 has already far exceeded its FY 2008 nett profit of RMB 195 million by 43%. Unless market sentiments or world economy deteriorated badly or other bad news surface over the next few weeks, such a stock would have a very high probability of breaking its old record high soon |

Oceanus last done price sit nicely on the 14 day moving average. If on monday, Oceanus can close at least 0.43 level, then the MACD will show 4 red 1 green and that means the uptrend wiil continue to test the resistance level of 0.47 again.
Normally most resistance level will break after 2 or times tested. If the second time does not break in this month, then most likely it will break in Feb ( ie CNY ).
So those who are holding on to the Oceanus stock, do not panic to sell or to cut loss. Just wait for the upturn again.
I POST - YOU DECIDE
Good Luck !!! |
